Each spring and fall, wedding professionals unveil a plethora of fabulous wedding ideas to keep the bridal business fresh and on the cutting edge. So, what’s en vogue for today’s savvy brides? I cannot possibly cover every trend in one short article, but here are a few fads to think about.
As far as gown trends go for spring 2010, watch for these iconic themes straight off of the catwalk.
Showcased on sashes, bows, flowers, beading and other intricate details, the addition of small black accents returns to bridal from last year. However, new this season, look for an emphasis on metallics (golds and bronzes), too.
Almost reminiscent of the 50s, several couture designers unveiled tea-length styles with layers of delicate tulle underneath. These gowns appeared flirty and fun for young brides.
Signs of rebirth with beautiful silk and organza hand-sewn flowers were prevalent in almost every collection on the runway. From full-skirts dressed with daisy-like appliqués to sheaths with delicate roses—flowers are in. So fresh and upbeat.
Structural, origami-inspired gowns with stiff manipulations of fabrics, recognizable pleats, and the inclusion of everyday pockets was also paramount.
Lastly, watch for the use of uncut edges (frayed-appearance) and sheer, nude fabrics at the neckline for contemporary flair.
What’s Chic in Wedding Gowns
As far as the bridal party goes, emphasis on individuality among attendants continues this year. Whether your attendants wear the same color with varied dress styles or different variations of a color theme (i.e. spring flowers,) the trend is for each member of your bridal party to wear a singular dress that fits their figure best. Other brides are showcasing the importance of the Maid of Honor by selecting a unique dress that makes her prominent among the attendants. From bow ties to cummerbunds and even the entire suits themselves, unmatched attire for groomsmen is also becoming the norm.
Here Comes the Bride—and Her Pet
As you know, the pet craze continues to sweep the nation. Pet clothing, fancy pet cuisine, and glorified doggy daycare facilities are everywhere you turn. So, it is no wonder pets are making a big bark during weddings, too. More and more, we are seeing dogs escort their masters down the petal-lined aisle; standing alongside their owners as ring bearers during the ceremony; or even escorting parents and guests to their seats. Nothing is taboo these days.
But don’t just think of canine contributors. Exotic birds in fancy cages staged by the guest book to welcome attendees; cats dressed in matching wedding attire for the occasion; and the traditional release of white doves are all popular.
A Return to Big Celebrations
Now don’t get me wrong, budgeting for a wedding is still very important, but industry professionals agree that being a little less cautious when splurging is apparent.
As the economy seems to be in recovery, couples are feeling a bit more confident about planning what they truly want. For many, the concept of “less is more”-—is out. One of the biggest trends is the return of large bridal parties. Brides and grooms alike are not hesitating to include their grade school friends, college roommates, and family in large parties of 8, ten, or more. And oh, with their pets of course!
But remember, couples are still being money smart, too. For an out-of-this-world celebratory trip (“their splurge”), they are opting for contributions to their honeymoon registry over household items they may not need at this point.
Incorporating the “latest and greatest” is a must for today’s savvy brides. To recap: Large bridal parties; pets in the limelight; and stunning gowns with serious angles or dresses that fall to the knee, are all up-to-the-minute wedding trends to pay attention to, this year.
